Your complete move out guide for students in Leeds

2023-05-01

Hey, fellow Leeds students! So, the time has come to spread your wings and move out of your house. It's an exciting milestone, but let's face it, moving can be a bit overwhelming. Don't fret, though—we’ve got your back! In this blog, we’ll share some helpful tips and tricks to make your move-out process a breeze. From cleaning and repairing damages to getting rid of rubbish and finding local charities for your unwanted clothes, we'll cover it all. So, let's dive right in!

Cleaning, oh cleaning!

We know that student accommodations can get a little messy. But fear not! It's time to put on some music, grab your cleaning supplies, and make your place sparkle. Here's a pro tip: create a cleaning rota with your housemates. Divide the tasks equally, so everyone chips in. Vacuum and mop the floors, wipe down ALL surfaces, deep clean the oven, fridge/ freezer and washing machine, and don't forget those pesky corners and cobwebs. It’s super important the property is left as clean as possible to ensure you are on track to receiving your full deposit back. Any questions about what you should or shouldn’t touch? Just drop us a line

Damages

Next up, let's talk about repairing damages. Accidents happen, right? It's essential to take responsibility for any damages that go beyond normal wear and tear. Take a stroll through your place and assess the situation. Are there any holes in the walls? Broken doorknobs? Flickering lights? Get in touch with your Property Manager to inform them about the damages. Being upfront about it shows responsibility, and it saves you from unexpected deductions from your deposit. It also gives us time to fix these issues for the next set of tenants moving in!

It's not all rubbish!

Now, let's tackle the rubbish. Moving out is a perfect opportunity to declutter and get rid of unwanted items for your next house. Remember, don't leave ANYTHING that isn't on your inventory in the house, otherwise you may be charged for a removal fee. Dispose of rubbish responsibly by separating recyclables from general waste. Leeds has fantastic recycling facilities, so take advantage of them. Additionally, consider listing unwanted items on local Facebook groups or other platforms such as Vinted or Depop where someone else might find them useful. One person's trash is another person's treasure, after all!

Rags to riches!

But what about those unwanted clothes? Leeds is home to some incredible local charities that would be more than happy to take them off your hands. On Otley Road alone there is Oxfam, Mind, Cats Protection, St Gemma’s Hospice, British Heart Foundation, and Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity- so you’re spoilt for choice! The Leeds Community Clothing Exchange is a fantastic organisation that accepts gently used clothing and redistributes it to those in need. It's a win-win situation—you declutter your wardrobe and make a positive impact on someone else's life. Additionally, there are numerous clothing bins dotted around Leeds. By donating, you're not only reducing waste but also supporting the less fortunate.

Let’s talk money

We hope by now you know it's crucial to pay your bills on time throughout your tenancy. You will need to notify your utility providers about your move-out date to ensure a smooth transition. Settle any outstanding balances promptly and return any equipment or keys as required. This will prevent any last-minute issues and ensure a good reference from us, which can come in handy for future rentals. If you are all inclusive with us, you don’t need to worry about your bills, we will sort it all.

Moving out of your Leeds student house doesn't have to be a stressful affair. With a bit of planning and organisation, you can make the process a breeze. By following these tips, you’ll find moving out can be easier than you think, and you’ll be ready to start your next step in life.
